System selection
How do I estimate the battery capacity I need?
Calculate each critical load as power × quantity × runtime, then add the results. Allow for the permitted depth of discharge, inverter losses, and the reserve you want to keep. The site calculator provides a starting estimate, but the final configuration must be checked against inverter limits and the datasheet for the exact battery.
What is the difference between kW and kWh when sizing a system?
kW is power: how much load the system can supply at one time. kWh is energy: how long those loads can run. A battery may have enough energy but still be unable to start a load with high inrush current if the battery or inverter power limit is too low.
Are nominal energy and usable energy the same?
No. Nominal energy describes the full rated energy, while usable energy depends on the permitted depth of discharge and system settings. For example, the A8 datasheet specifies 8 kWh nominal and 6.4 kWh usable at 80% DoD. Do not apply that ratio automatically to other models.
How do I choose between a low-voltage and high-voltage Pytes system?
Low-voltage 51.2 V models such as A8, V5, V12, and E‑BOX pair with a compatible low-voltage inverter and scale in parallel. HV48100 forms a high-voltage system from series-connected modules managed by a BMU and requires a matching HV inverter. The architectures are not interchangeable, and high-voltage systems must be designed and serviced by qualified professionals.
Can I expand the system later?
Yes, if the exact model, inverter, and wiring architecture allow it. A8, V5 Series, and V12 support up to 16 batteries in parallel. E‑BOX 48100R supports 16 only when the carton and serial number carry the C16 marking; other versions support up to 8. Pi LV1 and high-voltage systems use their own expansion architecture and must follow their model-specific manuals.
Compatibility and BMS
How should inverter compatibility be verified?
Check the exact battery and inverter models, not only the brand. System voltage, CAN or RS485 protocol, cable and pinout, DIP code or address, firmware versions, and current limits must all match. The Compatibility List is a starting point, but the local document is a 2023 revision and does not include every newer model, so obtain current confirmation before purchase.
Why does the inverter need BMS communication?
In closed-loop operation, the BMS sends state of charge, voltage, current, temperature, warnings, and permitted charge and discharge limits to the inverter. This helps the inverter remain within battery limits. After connection, select the correct lithium/BMS mode and confirm that the inverter displays battery data rather than voltage alone.
Can I use an ordinary Ethernet cable in an RJ45 port?
Not necessarily. An RJ45 connector may carry CAN, RS485, RS232, or battery cascade communication, and inverter pinouts differ. Some combinations use a standard straight-through cable; others require a custom cable with a defined battery and inverter end. Follow the integration guide for the exact device pair.
What do master, slave, and DIP settings mean?
In a parallel bank, one battery reports combined data to the inverter as the master while the others operate as slaves over cascade Link ports. For V5 and E‑BOX, the master DIP code depends on the inverter protocol. A8 automatically assigns slave addresses without manual DIP settings on each slave. Always follow the port and addressing diagram for the exact series.
Can solar panels be connected directly to the battery?
No. PV modules connect to a compatible inverter or charge controller that regulates charging within battery limits. The V12 manual, for example, explicitly prohibits connecting PV wiring directly to the battery.
Installation and safety
Can I install a Pytes battery myself?
The manufacturer requires installation and service by qualified personnel. Even 51.2 V batteries can deliver hazardous short-circuit current, while HV systems add a high-voltage shock risk. Correct grounding, DC protection, cable sizing and torque, polarity checks, and compliance with local rules are required.
Can a Pytes battery be installed in an apartment, garage, or outdoors?
There is no single answer for every model. A8, V5 Series, and E‑BOX 48100R are IP20 and require a dry, controlled, ventilated, restricted-access location. V12 is IP66, but its manual still requires protection from direct sunlight, standing water, heat sources, and access by children. Weight, escape routes, fire rules, and local electrical requirements must also be assessed.
Can the battery be charged below 0°C?
For A8, V5 Series, E‑BOX 48100R, and V12, the specified minimum charging temperature is 0°C, even though discharge may be allowed below freezing. Heating is optional on some V5 configurations rather than standard. Never transfer one model’s temperature range to another, and do not charge until the battery returns to its permitted range.
How should multiple low-voltage batteries be connected in parallel?
Follow the model-specific diagram and use busbars or the recommended junction box. To share current evenly, parallel cables should have the same length, cross-section, material, and resistance. V5, E‑BOX, and V12 allow their low-voltage modules to be connected only in parallel; series connection is prohibited.
What should be checked before first startup?
Verify polarity, grounding, power-terminal torque, DC protection, Link/CAN/RS485 cabling, and protocol settings. The V5, E‑BOX, and V12 manuals instruct installers to start all batteries before starting the inverter to reduce inrush stress from the inverter capacitors.
Operation and troubleshooting
Does a red ALM indicator always mean the battery has failed?
No. In the V5, E‑BOX, and V12 manuals, a blinking ALM can indicate a warning, while a steady ALM with the other indicators off can indicate active protection. Protection often clears after voltage, current, or temperature returns to range. Check the exact LED pattern in the manual and never bypass protection.
What should I do after a full discharge or low-voltage protection event?
The V5, E‑BOX, V12, and HV48100 manuals require the battery to be recharged within 12 hours after full discharge or a low-voltage event. Do not force-start a deeply discharged or damaged battery; if normal charging does not begin, contact the installer or support.
How should a battery be stored when the system is not in use?
Disconnect it from loads and charging equipment, and store it in a cool, dry place within the temperatures stated in its manual. The V5, E‑BOX, V12, and HV48100 documents call for inspection and periodic charging at least every six months; exact target SOC and temperature limits are model-specific.
What routine maintenance is required?
Battery modules have no user-serviceable internal parts. Periodically inspect cables and connectors, mounting, grounding, ventilation clearances, and signs of moisture, dust, deformation, odor, or overheating. Do not open the enclosure, repair the BMS, or install unverified firmware yourself.
What should I do with a wet, damaged, or overheating battery?
Do not energize, charge, or dismantle it. If safe, shut the system down using its normal controls, avoid touching a hot enclosure, restrict access, and contact emergency services or qualified support as appropriate. Use the fire-response procedure from the exact system manual and local safety plan because low- and high-voltage system requirements differ.
Documentation and support
Which document should I use: datasheet, manual, or Compatibility List?
Use the datasheet for rated specifications; the User Manual for installation, startup, indicators, temperature, storage, and troubleshooting; and the Integration Guide for cable pinout, DIP settings, and inverter configuration. The Compatibility List identifies possible pairings but does not replace a current model and firmware check.
What warranty applies to a Pytes battery?
Warranty duration and terms depend on the model, region, and document supplied with that product. Do not rely on terms for another series: review the datasheet and applicable Warranty Terms before purchase, and retain the invoice, serial number, and installation record. Unauthorized disassembly, incorrect wiring, or operation outside specified conditions may affect coverage.
What information should I prepare for system selection or technical support?
For sizing, provide the load list and power, desired backup time, inverter model, PV details, and installation conditions. For troubleshooting, add exact battery and inverter models and serial numbers, firmware versions, LED pattern or error code, SOC, voltage, temperature, wiring photos, and any recent system changes.
